Sustainable Sailing Tourism: Navigate with Ecological Awareness

As more and more travelers seek environmentally responsible experiences, sustainable nautical tourism has become one of the key trends in the industry. At Navega.me, we want to share why sailing aboard a catamaran is one of the most conscious and sustainable ways to enjoy the sea.

Lower environmental impact through sailing

Using wind as the primary means of propulsion, thanks to large sail surfaces and comfortable sailing conditions, catamarans are a low-impact, eco-friendly choice. Unlike other boats that rely solely on engines, catamarans allow much of the route to be completed using minimal fossil fuels, resulting in significantly reduced CO2 emissions.

Energy efficiency with low-consumption engines

Modern catamarans are equipped with twin low-consumption diesel engines, used in combination with the mainsail and jib. Thanks to their hydrodynamic design, these vessels require less power to move, improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon footprint per nautical mile. Equipped with a generator, they also do not rely on main engines to maintain basic energy or run air conditioning systems onboard.

Sustainable autonomy: onboard watermakers

One of the features that sets long-range catamarans apart is the installation of a watermaker onboard. This system transforms seawater into fresh drinking water, eliminating the need to enter ports during the week and reducing pressure on island freshwater supplies, which are often scarce. It’s a key solution to minimize waste and optimize resources.

Waste reduction and respect for the environment

Onboard our catamarans, we encourage conscious living: we use biodegradable cleaning products, reduce single-use plastics, and promote responsible waste disposal. Sailing also allows access to remote coves and natural spots without altering the ecosystem—provided we follow anchoring and conservation regulations. During the week, we practice waste separation for plastic and glass to encourage recycling once we return to port.

Sailing with purpose: a transformative experience

Sustainable nautical tourism isn’t just about minimizing environmental impact—it’s about living the sea in a more authentic, mindful way. Sailing encourages us to slow down, to observe nature respectfully, and to understand the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems.

At Navega.me, we believe that luxury and adventure can coexist with environmental commitment. We support regenerative tourism—where each voyage leaves a positive trace: on the sailors and the environment that welcomes us.
