Sailing Ibiza and Formentera by Catamaran: A Journey You Won’t Want to End

Sailing through Ibiza and Formentera on a catamaran means experiencing the Mediterranean differently. It’s not just about visiting the Balearic Islands — it’s about letting the sea set the pace, waking up in hidden coves, sharing fresh, local meals under an open sky, and creating a trip measured not in miles, but in unforgettable moments.

We set sail from San Antonio, with the comfort and convenience of having our own mooring at the marina. It made boarding smooth and easy from the start — perfect for bringing provisions aboard, settling into the boat, and meeting the crew at a relaxed pace. Between laughter, cold beers already clinking, and that spark of a journey just beginning, we already felt at home. And when we finally untied the ropes, we were officially in sea mode.

Within hours, we were anchored off Cala Bassa or Cala Comte, jumping into the sea for that first swim — the kind that switches everything off and makes you feel alive.

Heading south, the route brought us to Es Vedrà, the iconic rock that rises from the sea in silence. There’s something mystical about it — a presence that doesn’t need words. Evenings ended in Cala d’Hort or Porroig, with sunset dinners on deck, chilled rosé, gentle laughter, and plans made on the fly.

Arriving in Formentera always feels special. In Espalmador, a deserted island just north of the main coastline, we witnessed one of those rare natural shows: the full moon rising as the sun set behind us. Nobody spoke — not because there was nothing to say, but because we all understood how unique that moment was.

At dawn, Ses Illetes gave us a memory to keep forever. Stillness, glassy water, warm coffee in hand, salt on our skin, and peace across the group. We stepped onto the beach barefoot, took a walk, and quietly returned to the boat — no one in a rush.

Later, we dropped anchor in Cala Saona, and shared one of the highlights of the trip.

There, under the midday sun and with the catamaran perfectly anchored, we had paella delivered directly to the boat, brought over from shore on a small dinghy. The rice was still steaming, rich with local seafood, and served alongside our own curated selection of chilled white wines, Mediterranean-style starters and fresh-cut fruit.

It was the kind of lunch that doesn’t need a white tablecloth — just bare feet, laughter, and the view of Formentera all to ourselves. Dining on a catamaran like that, barefoot and carefree, felt both luxurious and natural.

The afternoon unfolded with snorkeling and paddleboarding to sea caves, a few long swims over the Posidonia meadows, and quiet chats where silence often said it all.

Another day took us along Formentera’s west coast. We passed Migjorn, let the breeze push us gently, and arrived just in time for dinner at the iconic Blue Bar, where we anchored near the beach. That night, we stepped ashore for music, cocktails, and soft lights as the sky slowly turned violet. One of those slow nights where nobody checks the time.

Heading north brought a different kind of energy. In Portinatx, we sat down for dinner at a well-loved local restaurant. In Cala Xarraca, we took the paddleboards again and explored rocky formations and caves only visible from the water. And when we reached Benirràs, the vibe changed completely — the sunset fell between the hills as drummers on the beach played their rhythm, marking the end of the day with a pulse that stayed with us long after.

The final evening took us back to San Antonio, but the journey didn’t feel like it was ending. We watched our last sunset from Café del Mar or Mambo Café, with soft music, golden light, and that special energy only shared experiences create. Glasses clinked, the breeze cooled our sun-warmed skin, and we knew something rare had just happened.

Because this wasn’t just a week at sea — it was an intimate journey, shared with strangers who became a crew. It was the kind of trip that only happens when the wind, the sea, and the people are just right.
